Between Buddha and Tsar: Kalmyk Buddhist Clergy in Late Imperial Russia

My dissertation project focuses on the question how the Russian Empire dealt with its religious minorities. The aim of this research is to explore the Russian Empire’s policies towards a minority religion – Kalmyk Buddhism – and shed light on which mechanisms were used by the Russian Empire in its attempt to assimilate and incorporate Kalmyk Buddhism in its governmental scheme.
