Guidelines regarding the use of images

Tables, maps and illustrations should be submitted separately from the text but to the same email address. Please indicate in your text where they should appear [PHOTO 1 ABOUT HERE], [TABLE 3 ABOUT HERE], and insert a caption in the same place.

By default, internet images cannot be used freely, as they belong to their authors. This applies to pictures from press agencies, newspapers, and social media. However, images uploaded under certain licenses can be used for free, under different conditions. Most of these licenses are Creative Commons (CC). For more information about CC licenses, please see their website. Otherwise, if a picture does not have the proper license, citing its source is not enough.

If you are the author of the photo or video, in principle you need the depicted persons’ consent for publication, which can be obtained verbally. If this is not the case, then a balancing of interests will be applied, namely balancing the public’s interest in accessing information against the interest of the persons depicted.

If you are using images created by others, we need permissions from the author for publication. The permission can be in the form of an email statement like this:

I grant my permission to Mr/Ms XX to use my image of XX, originally published on the website XX, to be republished in his/her article XX, on the website of XX. Mr/Ms XX has agreed to acknowledge that I am the author of the image.

Videos should be in Full HD (1920x1080), and we recommend the .mp4 format.

Photos should be in the highest resolution possible, in the formats of .jpg, .tiff, or .png. No compression is needed.
