What happened to transportation labour?

A MoLab Conversation with Erik Forman and Biao Xiang

What happened to transportation labour?

Transportation workers — railway workers, postal workers, port workers, and truck drivers — were once among the most unionized workforce in the early 20th century. So why are their 21st century counterparts the least organized? 'Uberization'—the replacement of industries that had more stable labour relations with on-demand business models based on gig labour, as pioneered by the mobility service company Uber—is new, but not inevitable or irresistible. In this video Erik Forman (PhD candidate in anthropology at City University of New York, and co-founder of The Drivers Cooperative) discusses with Biao Xiang about historical changes to labour movements in the U.S. that constantly demand new theoretical thinking.
